  • Mary appeared on the 1901 census at the same address, listed as the two year old daughter of Patrick McGovern. Also there were her 22 year old mother, Mary, and her one month old sister, Margaret.
  • Mary had two other siblings: her brother James (Jimmy) Jardine McGovern, born on 5 Apr 1906 at 209 Quarry Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire; and another sister, Annie.
  • Mary married Arthur O’Neill, son of Samuel O’Neill and Agnes Devan, on 22 Apr 1922 at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. The marriage was conducted by William McAvery in the presence of James O’Neill and Hannah Mc?
  • In 1931 Mary and family emigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada, in search of work. They returned to Scotland in 1932/3, and then moved to London in 1937.
  • Mary died in 197? in Hamilton.

Patrick (Paddy) McGovern

  • Patrick (Paddy) McGovern was born on 6 Mar 1874 at 7:30am in Church Yard Street, Strathaven, Lanarkshire. He was the son of Edward McGovern and Margaret Hart.
  • Paddy was the youngest of eight children. His siblings were Peter (b 1859), Edward (b 1861), John (b 1863), Michael (b 1866), Margaret (b 1868), Helen (b 1869) and Hugh (b 1872).
  • He was listed as the 8 year old son of Edward McGovern in the 1881 census at Mrs Semple’s House, Churchyard Street, Avondale, Lanarkshire.
  • He appeared in the 1891 census at 7 Greenfield Road, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Paddy was listed as a 17 year old Coal Miner, a Boarder in the household of his step-brother James Casey, also a Coal Miner.
  • Patrick married Mary Jardine, daughter of Thomas Jardine and Mary Blair, on 27 May 1898 at the RC Chapel, Strathaven. Their witnesses were a Patrick Grady and an Anna O’Horan. Patrick’s occupation was given as Coal Miner, Mary’s as Domestic Servant.
  • He appeared in the 1901 census at 10 Sandknowe, Strathaven. Paddy was listed as Head of Household, a 27 year old Coal Miner.
  • Paddy died on 30 Dec 1946 at 199 Quarry Street, Hamilton. His death was caused by ’Cardio-Vascular Degeneration and Broncho-pneumonia’.

Mary Jardine

  • Mary Jardine was born on 22 Apr 1878 at 6:40pm in Pilot Acre, Blantyre, Lanarkshire. She was described as the illegitimate daughter of Mary Blair. Her father's name was not given.
  • Mary was the fourth of five children. Her siblings were Thomas (b 1871), Alexander (b 1873), Jane (b 1875) and James (b 1880).
  • She was listed as the daughter of Thomas Jardine in the 1881 census at Stonefield, Blantyre.
  • She was a Domestic Servant prior to her marriage.
  • Mary married Patrick (Paddy) McGovern, son of Edward McGovern and Margaret Hart, on 27 May 1898 in the RC Chapel, Strathaven, Lanarkshire.
  • She was listed as Paddy’s wife in the 1901 census.

Edward McGovern

  • Edward McGovern was born around 1838 in County Cavan, Ulster, the son of Peter McGovern and Margaret Dolan.
  • He had at least one sibling, Peter (b around 1828).
  • Edward ’McGoveran’ married Margaret Hart, daughter of Edward Hart and Mary Dempsy, according to the practise of the Roman Catholic Church, on 7 May 1858 at Strathaven, Lanarkshire.
  • Edward was a Labourer in 1859 when his son Peter was born in Bothwell, Lanark.
  • He was listed as the 26 year old brother of Peter McGovern in the 1861 census at South Side, Queensferry, West Lothian. Edward’s occupation was Agricultural Labourer.
  • Edward registered the birth of his son, Edward, in 1861 whilst living in Churchyard Street, Strathaven. He gave his occupation as Agricultural Labourer.
  • He was an Agricultural Labourer in 1863 when he registered the birth of John McGovern in ’Kirk Yard Street’, Strathaven.
  • He was recorded as a Railway Labourer in 1866, and an Agricultural Labourer in 1868.
  • He was an Agricultural Labourer in 1869 when he registered the birth of Helen McGovern in Churchyard Street, Strathaven.
  • Edward was listed as an Agricultural Labourer and head of household in the 1871 census at Churchyard Street (Mr Arbuckles), Strathaven.
  • He was an Agricultural Labourer in 1872.
  • Edward registered the birth of Patrick (Paddy) McGovern in 1874, again at Church Yard Street, Strathaven.
  • He witnessed and registered the death of Margaret Hart on 3 Nov 1875 in Church Yard Street, Strathaven.
  • Edward married Mary Mulligan, daughter of Lawrence Mulligan and Alice Macguire, on 26 Dec 1876 at Larkhall, Lanarkshire.
  • He was listed as the 43 year old head of household in the 1881 census at Mrs Semple’s House, Churchyard Street, Avondale, Lanarkshire.   • Prior to her marriage Margaret was a Domestic Servant.

  • Margaret appeared in the 1861 census at South Side, Queensferry, West Lothian.
  • She registered the birth of Michael McGovern (b 1866) whilst living in Castle Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire.
  • She registered the birth of Margaret McGovern (b 1868) from Churchyard Street, Strathaven.
  • Margaret appeared in the 1871 census at Churchyard Street, Mr Arbuckles, Strathaven.
  • She died on 3 Nov 1875 at 10:10pm in Church Yard Street, Strathaven. The cause of her death was given as Bronchitis (4 months).

  • Thomas, his mother and his three half-siblings appeared on the 1851 census at Penpont, Dumphriesshire.
  • He registered the birth of his son, Thomas Jardine, born in 1871 at 53 Main Street, Calton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire.
  • Thomas was listed as head of household in the 1871 census at 53 Main Street, Calton, Glasgow. He was described as an unmarried Slater of 27.
  • He witnessed the birth of Alexander Jardine on 30 Jan 1873 at 10:45pm at 53 Main Street, Calton, Glasgow. His occupation then was a Slater (Journeyman).
  • Thomas was listed as the 35 year old unmarried head of household in the 1881 census at Stonefield, Blantyre, Lanarkshire. His occupation was Coal Miner.
  • He witnessed the death of Mary Blair on 6 Jan 1882 at 6:50pm at 7 Hart’s Land, Blantyre. When Thomas registered her death he described himself as her friend.
  • He was listed as head of household in the 1891 census at 9 Greenfield Road, Hamilton. Thomas dexcribed himself as a 47 year old widower and Miner.
  • Thomas married Isabella Small on 24 Aug 1894 at 35 Whitehill Road, Hamilton, in a Free Church of Scotland ceremony. His occupation was Pit Sinker.
  • He was recorded in 1898 as a Coal Miner.
  • Thomas witnessed the death of Isabella Small on 22 Apr 1910 at 1pm at 31 Gladstone Street, Hamilton.
  • He died on 29 Dec 1912 at 0:30am at 22 Glasgow Road, Blantyre. The cause of his death was given as Cardiac Failure.
